With the result, Virginia Tech moves to 4-0-1 on the season and notched its third shutout, as well.
In the 19th minute, Hackenberg stepped up to the penalty spot for a third consecutive game after being brought down in the box. As he has in the two previous moments this season, the forward ushered the ball into the back of the net to give Virginia Tech an early lead.
Tech had a second penalty attempt in the half, but Furman’s Aaron Salinas came up with a stop to keep the deficit at one.
In the second half, Furman experienced more possession in the attacking end, however a season-high seven saves Cooper Wenzel kept the hosts at bay.
The Hokies, much more clinical with their opportunities, scored on their first shot attempt of the second half – a left-footed hit by Hensley from just outside the box. Andy Sullins did well to clean up an attempted clearance by Furman on the edge of the box, then dropped it off to Hensley, who ripped a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal for the second of his career.
Just two minutes later, the Hokies tripled their fortunes, as Stephensen hit an overhead kick as he was falling back – putting his body on the line from the incoming defender and goalkeeper in order to secure his second goal of the year.
Tech saw out the rest of the game to secure a second road result of the season.
