BLACKSBURG – Wide receiver Stephen Gosnell has been a reliable target in the Virginia Tech offense this season. Returning for his fifth year, Gosnell’s ability to corral short and long passes makes the wideout a key factor in the passing game. Fans can watch Gosnell and the Hokies when they travel to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida on Sept. 27 in a matchup against the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
Gosnell assumed a large role during the 2023 season. The wideout played in all 13 games for the Hokies, tallying 22 receptions for 348 yards with three touchdowns on the year. Much of the wide receiver’s production came in the intermediate areas of the field, catching 14 passes for 169 yards over the season (48.6%). For his efforts, Gosnell earned a strong 93.8 receiving grade on passes of less than 10 yards and a 95.7 receiving grade in passes of 10 to 19 yards from Pro Football Focus.
The 6-foot-2 wideout is turning heads with his play through four games this season. Gosnell has already eclipsed his junior-year yardage with 8 receptions for 170 yards. His 21.3 yards per catch ranks third on the team, and his total yards trail only fellow graduate student Jaylin Lane (247). The wideout’s 97.0 receiving grade on passes 20 yards or further from PFF is a testament to Gosnell’s ability to make big impacts on offense.
Lining up in various schemes, Gosnell and his success this season can be attributed to his ability to make big plays when the Hokies need it most. Fans saw his catch radius on display during the matchup against Marshall when Gosnell fully extended for a diving 49-yard snag that set up a 3-yard Kyron Drones rushing touchdown. Gosnell led all Hokie receivers in yardage in the eventual 37-17 victory.
