BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Men’s Soccer currently boasts a 5-0-1 record and a No. 13 national ranking after a commanding 2-0 victory over Syracuse. This unbeaten streak through six matches marks a historic achievement for the Hokies, who have surpassed their previous 5-1 starts. As the team continues its remarkable season, Tech now turns its focus to a challenging road match against SMU before returning to Blacksburg for another ACC showdown against Pitt on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. ET at Thompson Field for #LOVE International Night.

The Hokies’ success has been anchored by their defense, recording four shutouts in six matches. Goalkeeper Cooper Wenzel has been instrumental, with multiple clean sheets, and his four shutouts on the season are the most for a Virginia Tech keeper since 2021. Standing at 6-2, Wenzel leads the ACC in goals against average, conceding only three goals all season (.500 GAA) placing the senior tied for ninth nationally and second among keepers with a minimum of six games played. Wenzel’s recent performance against Syracuse, where he made four crucial saves, earned him ACC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The defensive unit is strengthened by co-captain Willie Cardona, a key leader who earned a spot on the 2024 ACC Preseason Watch List, along with freshman Olafur Floki Stephensen, who has quickly contributed with two goals and one assist. Fellow center back Trey Gardiner has been a pivotal presence, particularly on set pieces. Gardiner notched his first goal of the season against Presbyterian, converting a corner kick from co-captain Carter Hensley.

Offensively, the Hokies have been just as impressive, becoming one of only four teams nationwide to score multiple goals in every match this season. Their well-rounded attack features contributions from 10 different players, including seven newcomers. Freshman midfielder Ian Marcano has made a significant impact, scoring a crucial equalizer against No. 23 Kentucky. Meanwhile, senior striker Ethan Hackenberg has been a consistent offensive threat, netting three goals in games against UNC Asheville, Kentucky and Furman. With 15 goals this season, the Hokies are tied for third-most in the ACC, highlighting the balance and depth of their offensive unit.

Looking ahead, the Hokies have 10 more matches slated for the remainder of the season, setting the stage for a compelling finish. As they continue to build on their strong start, Virginia Tech will aim to maintain their momentum and solidify their position in the national rankings. With both strong defensive performances and a potent attack, the Hokies are well-positioned to make a significant impact as they strive for postseason success.

The Hokies' next three home matchups include Pitt, followed by Queens (N.C.) on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. for "Rocktober" and Maroon Effect, and NC State on Friday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. for Senior Night. Fans are encouraged to attend, with free entry to all three games and special giveaways at each match.
