Tech opens first weekend of fall competition

Hokies are competing in San Francisco, Calif. and Elon, N.C. over the course of three days.

Battle in the Bay Draw

DAY 4 -

San Francisco, Calif. - Mulready capped off her first weekend as a Hokie with another win in the singles extra draw. 

Mulready defeated Madelyn Ferreros of Sacramento State, 5-7, 6-1, 10-3. 

DAY 3 -

Elon, N.C. - The second day of competition for the Hokies in North Carolina was jam-packed, with the final round of doubles and two rounds of singles play on Sept. 14. 

Frosch and Mendoza kept up their strong form from yesterday, with a 6-3 win this morning, over ECU’s Joan Madi and Isabella Rivera Ortiz.

Cartledge and Ziets-Segura competed together for the third and final round of doubles competition, while Tepes and Rieckert played a second match of doubles together after playing one on Friday. 

In singles, both Cartledge and Frosch picked up two wins. Cartledge found her first success of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over North Carolina Central’s Alejandra Hidalgo Vega. Her second win of the day was another set sweep, this time 6-4, 6-2, over Elon’s Lisa Kranec. 

Frosch pulled out a gritty straight-set win in the second round of singles with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Liberty’s Maria Turchetto. She was able to find success again, in the third round of singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Elon’s Helen Sarikulaya. 

Ziets-Segura and Mendoza both found their first singles wins in Hokie uniforms. Ziets-Segura defeated Liberty’s Sadie Daavettila in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. Mendoza took down North Carolina Central’s Gabrille Mejia Arenas 5-7, 6-2, 10-7. 

Tepes and Hegarty both competed in the second and third rounds of singles, while Rieckert competed in only the third round. 

San Francisco, Calif. - Uslu and Mulready both competed in consolation matches on Sept. 14. 

Uslu advanced to the semifinals of the consolation draw due to a walkover from her opponent but fell in straight sets in the semifinal match.

Mulready played in the first round of the Extra Women’s SG Saturday draw, advancing past Irene Riva 6-0, 6-2.

DAY 2 -

Elon, N.C. - Another seven Hokies started their fall competition at the Jimmy Powell Invitational in Elon, N.C. on Sept. 13. 

Laima Frosch and freshman Elizabeth Mendoza won in their first doubles match of the day, with a 6-4 win over Elon’s Helen Sarikulaya and Heidi Bulger.

Similarly, Charlotte Cartledge and Linda Ziets-Segura joined forces for the first time, playing two doubles matches. Taylor Rieckert played doubles competition with both Michaela Hegarty and Samie Tepes. 

Laima Frosch defeated ECU’s Bachir 5-7, 7-6, 10-6, and Charlotte Cartledge took down ECU’s Jeromin 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. Ziets-Segura, Mendoza, Tepes, Hegarty, and Rieckert all competed in singles competition as well. 

San Francisco, Calif. - Uslu picked up a singles win in the consolation draw of the tournament, defeating Alaia Rubio Perez in straight sets on Friday afternoon. 

Mulready and Aksu also played in consolation draws on Friday but were unable to advance past their respective competitors. 

Uslu and Mulready fell in their quarterfinal doubles match to Washington State’s Elyse Tse and Yura Nakagawa 8-6 on Sept. 13. 

DAY 1 -

San Francisco, Calif. - Three Hokies kicked off their fall seasons at Battle in the Bay in San Francisco, Calif. on Sept. 12. 

Özlem Uslu, Semra Aksu, and Mila Mulready all competed on the first day of the singles competition. 

Uslu and Mulready teamed up for the first time in doubles competition, advancing to the quarterfinal round with an 8-5 win over Sacramento State’s pairing of Madelyn Ferreros and Irene Riva.
