BLACKSBURG – Returning for his fifth year with the Hokies, cornerback Dorian Strong is set to be a cornerstone of Virginia Tech’s defense. As one of the leaders in the secondary, the Upper Marlboro, Maryland native chose to bypass the NFL Draft to leave a lasting impact on the 2024 season after earning Third Team All-ACC and Second Team All-American Action Network honors in 2023. Strong will kick off his final campaign in the season opener against Vanderbilt on Saturday, Aug. 31, at noon ET, with the game airing live on ESPN.
Last year, Strong produced his best full-season stats, starting all 13 games at cornerback and setting career highs in total tackles, passes defended, interceptions and return yards. As a fourth-year player, he posted an 81.6 overall grade according to Pro Football Focus, ranking second on Virginia Tech's defense. The talented defensive back had an impressive statistical season, allowing just 9 receptions on 33 targets across 677 snaps, logging a 27.3% completion rate. Strong played nearly all of his snaps on the boundary, with 662 at cornerback and 15 in the slot.
Strong’s performances last year have earned him significant preseason recognition, including spots on Pro Football Focus' top 10 returning cornerbacks for 2024, On3’s top 100 players in college football and a top 100 rating in EA Sports’ College Football 25. This isn’t his first recognition from PFF either—as he was named ACC Defensive Back of the Week and was selected for PFF's Weekly College Football Team after recording two interceptions against Boston College in Week 11. With his outstanding footwork, quickness, and ability to mirror receivers, the Maryland product will be crucial in containing Vanderbilt's revamped offense, especially after holding opponents to less than one reception per game last season.
The Hokies are also reviving the "DBU" tradition with Mansoor Delane lining up opposite Dorian Strong for the third straight season. As the most seasoned cornerbacks on the roster, both players have more opportunity to elevate their game. The 6’1”, 185-pound Strong may increase his versatility by taking on more snaps in the slot and playing as the nickel in certain situations, boosting his draft value. Under cornerbacks coach Derek Jones' guidance, this formidable duo will be tough to beat.
