BLACKSBURG - Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, Ben Thomas, has announced the addition of Tra'von Phillips to the 2024-2025 coaching staff.  Phillips will assume the position of assistant coach for sprints, hurdles, and relays.

In 2019, Phillips graduated from Saginaw Valley State with a bachelor's degree in communications and a minor in management.  He participated in track and field at Saginaw as a short sprinter and holds two program records and eight All-Conference selections from his time as as student-athlete.  Immediately following his graduation, Phillips transitioned to coaching for his alma mater.

As an assistant coach at Saginaw, Phillips helped his athletes to eight program records, seven individual conference titles and nine All-American finishes in sprints and relays.

In his most recent role as an assistant coach at Davenport, Phillips shattered 11 program records between the men's and women's indoor and outdoor seasons.  His athletes have collected three All-Conference selections, five individual conference championships and three runner-up finishes in conference competitions.

We are thrilled to have Tra’Von Phillips join our staff, program, and community. His skillset as a developer of talent and relationship builder in recruiting are key components that make him an asset to our operation. He is a man of integrity and possesses a unique passion for teaching the sport of track & field. I’m very excited to see him in action as a mentor and coach serving our men’s and women’s sprinters, hurdlers and relays!
