BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech wide receiver Jaylin Lane is among the record 111 FBS nominees for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy and Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which have joined forces this year to unify college football’s highest community service honors.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, college football’s premier award for community service, is presented annually to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field. Named after Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer Danny Wuerffel, the award honors the former NFL quarterback’s commitment to inspiring greater service and unity in the world.
Lane (5-10, 196) played in 12 games last season, making nine starts. The Clover, South Carolina product caught 41 passes for 538 yards and six touchdowns.
During his time at Virginia Tech, Lane has made a positive impact in the New River Valley and surrounding area. He has participated in t-shirt painting with patients from Roanoke’s Carilion Children’s hospital and has been a mentor to students in the Montgomery County school system. Lane periodically greets Blacksburg Middle School students as part of Football Fridays in the fall, and he has been a regular visitor to the Unified Physical Education class at Blacksburg High School.
Among his other community outreach efforts, Lane has been dedicated to shelf building at the local YMCA thrift store. He is also a committed supporter of the annual Toys for Tots toy drive.
