SANFORD, Fla. – Demonstrating cool command and confidence on the mound as one of the nation's best first-year arms, Virginia Tech rookie starting pitcher Brett Renfrow was selected to the 2024 Perfect Game Freshman All-American Second Team, as announced by the outlet on Tuesday.
Renfrow thrived as Virginia Tech's primary series-opening starter, winning six decisions, logging five quality starts and allowing three earned runs or less on nine occasions. The 6-foot-3 right-hander from Manassas, Virginia, sported a 4.92 ERA during his first season in Blacksburg, recording 78 strikeouts through 75 innings pitched – all top-15 marks among ACC pitchers prior to the start of the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
Considering Virginia Tech's program history, Renfrow became the Hokies' 12th Freshman All-American selection and their sixth such as a pitcher all-time. With Renfrow's addition to the class, Tech has now produced five Freshman All-American honorees by name during John Szefc's tenure as head coach, including at least one during each of the past four full collegiate seasons.
Having not worked out as a pitcher until January 2024, Renfrow's first month on the competitive mound was nothing short of extraordinary. Welcoming the role as Virginia Tech's first true freshman hurler to start on Opening Day (Feb. 16) during the program's ACC era, he went 4-0 through his first four collegiate starts, during which he kept 19 out of 24 possible scoreless innings.
Renfrow bettered his collegiate debut – five innings of one-hit, seven-strikeout ball at Charlotte – with a grander ACC debut against Notre Dame (March 8), shutting down the Fighting Irish through eight innings while setting a season high in strikeouts (10). Ultimately, he eclipsed the seven-strikeout threshold five times during his rookie campaign, toeing a 3.50 season ERA as late into the year as May 4.
Statistically, Renfrow flexed a 1.39 WHIP and hit one batsman for the season while allowing a .253 opposing batting average – the 10th best mark among ACC pitchers as of May 30.
Factoring in his Freshman All-American distinction, Renfrow's first-year accolades include placement onto the 2024 All-ACC Third Team as well as the ACC All-Freshman Team. In two weeks, he will be one of 56 athletes competing in the 2024 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp in Cary, North Carolina, where he will be rostered onto one of two Team USA squads competing in a variety of premier international and domestic summer exhibitions.
Renfrow was one of four ACC arms appearing in Perfect Game's 2024 Freshman All-American listing, following closely behind First Team mentions Jason DeCaro (North Carolina), Aidan Knaak (Clemson) and Kyle Johnson (Duke).
