Virginia Tech student-athletes excel academically in 2023-24

BLACKSBURG – As the 2023-24 academic year has ended, Virginia Tech student-athletes once again excelled in the classroom.

The spring of 2024 matched multiple record-setting benchmarks from the first half of the academic year:

  • Athletics Department semester GPA
  • Athletics Department cumulative GPA
  • Number of teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

These benchmarks were made possible through the tremendous work by Tech student-athletes and the commitment from Tech's Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS).

SAASS supports Tech student-athletes by providing comprehensive academic programming while also monitoring their NCAA eligibility. In addition, the SAASS team works in close partnership with each coaching staff to ensure student-athletes are achieving their full academic potential.

Led by director of student-athlete academic support services Sarah Armstrong, SAASS employs 15 full-time staff, three interns and a number of Virginia Tech students as mentors and tutors.

"It's a true joy to see the hard work of our student-athletes, along with the support of the entire SAASS staff, being rewarded with such high academic accolades again this semester," Armstrong said. "To produce these high academic achievements, is extremely impressive when coupled with the numerous responsibilities that our student-athletes maintain."

About 71% (410) of Virginia Tech's 577 student-athletes during the spring of 2024 finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to earn Athletic Director Honor Roll distinction.

In total, Tech's 577 student-athletes combined for a 3.25 semester GPA.

Even more impressive was the fact that 225 Hokies finished with a GPA of 3.4 or higher to garner Dean's List accolades. Dean's list honors solely recognize the work of undergraduate students who are enrolled full-time. Thirty-six Hokies earned perfect 4.0 GPAs from both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Eighteen of Tech's 20 sports achieved a 3.0 or greater semester GPA. Men's indoor/outdoor track and field counts as one sport, as does women's indoor/outdoor track and field.

Among the men's sports at Virginia Tech, men's golf had the best semester in the classroom in the spring with a 3.50 team GPA. Women's golf carried the banner for the female sports, earning a 3.64 semester GPA.
