BLACKSBURG – The No. 15/16 Virginia Tech Hokies took a 6-1 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to an 11-2 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Sunday.
Freshman Emma Mazzarone (9-2) got the win out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (35-9-1, 17-4). The southpaw went two shutout innings, giving up one hit. Junior Molly Jacobson also pitched well, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit.
Offensively, the Hokies were led by sophomore Kylie Aldridge, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a triple, a walk and three RBI. Freshman Michelle Chatfield compiled a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Trinity Martin also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two doubles and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the first inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a one-run single off the bat of freshman Annika Rohs.
The Hokies then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the second inning after the Yellow Jackets cut it to 6-2. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Chatfield's leadoff home run off of senior Blake Neleman, which brought the score to 7-2 in favor of the Hokies.
Virginia Tech kept Georgia Tech scoreless before building their lead to 8-2 the following inning. The Hokies scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Emma Ritter.
Virginia Tech kept the Yellow Jackets scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. The three-run frame for the Hokies was punctuated by a two-run triple from Aldridge bringing the score to 11-2 in favor of Virginia Tech.
