Tech falls to No. 5 Syracuse

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech fell to No. 5 Syracuse, 15-5, on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field.

Despite Jocelyn Torres tying her season-high mark with 11 saves and five different Hokies getting on the scoresheet, 24 turnovers plagues Tech's afternoon.

The fifth-ranked Orange got off to a quick start with a 6-0 first quarter, claiming five of the seven draw controls in the quarter. Tech was able to place two shots on target, but 'Cuse's Delaney Sweitzer came up with a pair of saves to keep the Hokies off the board.

After conceding 29 seconds into the second quarter, the Hokies were able to harness some momentum and scored the games next two goals via Claire Schotta and Caroline Little

Syracuse tacked on two more goals before the half to head into the break with a 9-2 lead, marking the fewest goals that Tech has scored in a first half since facing No. 3 James Madison on Feb. 14.

Mia Pozzi, who has scored in all three of Virginia Tech's conference games this season, added to Tech's tally in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Hokies split the score 2-2, as Marie Cacciabaudo scored with the help of Gracie Kennedy's third assist of the season, while Grace New grabbed her first goal since Feb. 24, 2021 for Tech.

The Orange had four players with multiple goals, including hat tricks for Olivia Adamson, Emma Ward and Maddy Baxter.

Virginia Tech has a quick turnaround, as it faces Furman on the road at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.Gallery: (3-9-2024) LAX: Syracuse Match
