CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA --Georgia Amoore scored 39 points and Elizabeth Kitley added 20, but the Virginia Tech women's basketball team fell to the Virginia Cavaliers 80-75 on the road Sunday.
Amoore and Kitley's stellar scoring performances led the Hokies (23-6, 14-4) in the contest. Amoore tacked on four assists and two steals and Kitley added nine rebounds and four blocks. Clara Strack also helped out with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Virginia Tech shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up 19 assists on 28 made field goals. Individually, Olivia Summiel dished out the most for the Hokies with four assists and Carys Baker also added four assists of her own.
The Hokies did a great job disrupting Virginia shots in the contest, coming away with 10 blocks. Kitley's four rejections led the way individually for the Hokies.
How It Happened
After falling behind 17-11, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 49 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Baker, to narrow its deficit to 17-16, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Virginia Tech then started off the second quarter by going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kitley, to take a 23-17 lead. The Cavaliers then came roaring back to take a 34-29 lead heading into halftime.
Following halftime, Virginia Tech kept the Cavaliers from growing their lead before going on a 6-0 run to grab a 42-41 lead with 6:04 to go in the third. Virginia responded to seize a 56-54 lead entering the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 25 points in the paint.
Virginia kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-57 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Amoore's three, to seize a 63-61 lead with 5:51 to go in the contest. Virginia re-asserted control, outscoring the Hokies 19-12 the rest of the way to hand Virginia Tech the 80-75 loss. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.
The loss gives the Cavaliers half a point in the Commonwealth Clash, presented by Smithfield. The score for the Commonwealth Clash currently is 6-7 in favor of Virginia. For more information, visit hokiesports.com/clash.
