CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Virginia Tech fell to No. 1 Boston College, 20-7, inside Fish Field House on Sunday afternoon.
After the Hokies' strong start out the gates in their first time competing since Saturday, Feb. 24 against Louisville, Boston College flexed its muscle in the second quarter and created a deficit that Tech couldn't overcome.
Paige Tyson started the scoring off for the Hokies less than two minutes into the game during a possession that was initiated from Jocelyn Torres' first of six saves on the day. Claire Schotta doubled Virginia Tech's advantage just a few minutes later off an assist from Mia Pozzi.
The top-ranked Eagles eased back into the game with three unanswered goals to close out the first quarter, however.
Tyson opened the second quarter scoring just 31 seconds into the second frame to tie the game at 3-3.
Tech would go on to gain two more draw controls consecutively, giving them a 7-2 advantage in that category, however, Boston College answered with a 7-0 scoring run.
Olvia Vergano stopped that with a transition goal that was assisted by Kayla Downey, but that would be Vergano's only goal of the day. Downey, who assisted three scores, was held scoreless for the first time in 23 consecutive outings on Sunday.
The Hokies were able to reel in the Eagles a bit more in the third quarter in comparison to the second frame, which saw Boston College score nine goals on 14 efforts.
Tech held Boston College to only four goals in the third quarter, while Mia Pozzi had one of her own for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech wrapped up the match scoring two of the final three goals, including Isa Torres' first goal of her career.
Sophomore midfielder Lauren Render made her season debut for Tech, as well.
Virginia Tech returns to action in Blacksburg on Wednesday with a matchup against Elon before its next ACC test at home against Syracuse on Saturday.
