No. 13 Hokies score five unanswered runs to down Pitt, 5-3

BLACKSBURG, Va. --The No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies fought back from down 3-2 in the sixth inning to defeat the Pittsburgh Panthers 5-3 Thursday.

Senior David Shoemaker (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (20-4, 9-1). The southpaw went two shutout innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out one. Freshman Brett Renfrow started the ballgame and went 6.1 innings, surrendering three runs, earned, on two hits, walking two and striking out five.

At the plate, the Hokies were led by sophomore Henry Cooke, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Junior Carson DeMartini furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Christian Martin also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies were trailing 3-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Virginia Tech plated two runs when Cooke left the yard with senior Eddie Micheletti aboard.
