Virginia Tech knocks off Longwood 8-5 behind Grein's 10-strikeout showing

FARMVILLE, Va. --Sophomore Lyndsey Grein dominated on Tuesday, punching out 10 Longwood hitters over four innings of work to help lead the No. 12 Virginia Tech Hokies over the Lancers 8-5.

In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Grein (7-2) tossed four shutout innings while giving up one hit and walking two for Virginia Tech (23-4-1).

Offensively, the Hokies were paced by senior Cameron Fagan, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Emma Ritter put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Addy Greene also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Virginia Tech got an RBI single from Fagan, scoring Ritter from third base.

After the Lancers rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Hokies came back to retake the lead in the second inning. Virginia Tech picked up two runs when a single from Greene brought home freshman Emily LeGette and Ritter, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech's lead had disappeared once the fourth inning came around and turned into a 5-3 Longwood advantage, when the Hokies re-took control at 7-5. The Hokies bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Ritter.

Virginia Tech held the Lancers scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. The Hokies scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Zoe Yaeger, bringing the score to 8-5 in favor of Virginia Tech. The score remained 8-5 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies held on for the win.
