BLACKSBURG – Freshman Emma Mazzarone and sophomore Cassie Grizzard combined to toss a shutout on Sunday as the No. 18 Virginia Tech Hokies blanked the Pittsburgh Panthers 9-0.
Mazzarone (6-1) started and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (21-4-1, 9-0), going four shutout innings while giving up two hits, walking none, and striking out four.
At the plate, the Hokies were led by senior Addy Greene, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Senior Emma Ritter put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior Cameron Fagan also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Teagan Thrunk and a two-run home run from Greene.
The Hokies also added runs in the second and third innings on the way to the 9-0 victory.
