RALEIGH, NC --Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team past the NC State Wolfpack 72-61 on the road Thursday.
The Hokies (19-4, 10-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who had a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Matilda Ekh added 14 points and seven rebounds and Cayla King chipped in as well with 13 points.
The Virginia Tech offense was strong from beyond the arc, knocking down 11 threes on 30 attempts. King hit four treys for the Hokies in the contest.
Virginia Tech's defense held NC State to only 35.6 percent shooting from the field. The Wolfpack did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with five offensive rebounds and managed eight second chance points while Virginia Tech cleared 33 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-11, Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run with 4:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Clara Strack, to take a 19-13 lead. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 21-19 advantage.
NC State rallied to take a 31-27 lead before Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run starting at the 4:42 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Strack, to take a 35-31 lead. The Hokies kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 37-33 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 16 points.
Following intermission, Virginia Tech continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 51-44 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Amoore, to expand its lead further to 57-44 with two seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia Tech knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 20 total points.
The Hokies then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
