Grein's 12-strikeout showing leads Virginia Tech past Auburn 8-1

AUBURN, Ala. --Sophomore Lyndsey Grein was mowing people down on Friday, fanning 12 Auburn hitters over eight innings of work to help lead the No. 23 Virginia Tech Hokies over the No. 20 Tigers 8-1.

In addition to her 12 strikeouts, Grein (1-0) tossed eight innings, giving up one run, one walk, and eight hits.

Junior Rachel Castine led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and four RBI. Freshman Emily LeGette put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Bre Peck also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Virginia Tech with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. LeGette put Virginia Tech on the board with a solo home run off senior Maddie Penta, the first of her career.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning, when the Hokies started to rally. The Virginia Tech offense exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Castine, which brought the Hokies lead to 8-1. The score remained 8-1 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech coasted to the win.
