ATHENS, Ga. --An outstanding offensive output was not enough for No. 21 Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Hokies plated five runs, but could not hold the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs at bay, and were bested 7-5.
Sophomore Lyndsey Grein (2-1) took the loss in the circle for Virginia Tech (10-3-1).
Senior Emma Ritter led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. Senior Addy Greene compiled a standout performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Bre Peck also contributed, going 1-for-4 for Virginia Tech with a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Virginia Tech plated two runs off of Georgia pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Peck.
The Hokies then held the Bulldogs scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Ritter's leadoff home run off of senior Madison Kerpics, which brought the Hokies lead to 3-1.
Virginia Tech's lead had evaporated once the fourth inning arrived and turned into a 4-3 Georgia advantage, when the Hokies tied up the game at four. The Hokies pushed across a run on freshman Emily LeGette's one-out RBI double.
The Bulldogs busted up the tie and grabbed the lead heading into the seventh inning, when Virginia Tech got back on the board. The Hokies notched a run on Greene's two-out RBI double, bringing the score to 7-5 in favor of Georgia. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.
