Hokies complete undefeated weekend at home

BLACKSBURG, VA – The No. 13 Virginia Tech wrestling team completed an undefeated weekend against Duke (4-8, 0-3 ACC) and George Mason (10-8, 3-4 MAC) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Hokies (8-3, 3-0 ACC) went 19-1 on the weekend while surrendering only three takedowns in both duals while totaling 16 bonus point victories.

Six Hokies pulled double duty – Cooper Flynn (two major decisions), Sam Latona (tech fall, major decision), Tom Crook (two tech falls), Clayton Ulrey (two tech falls), Mekhi Lewis (two tech falls, and Andy Smith (tech fall, fall) combined for 12 bonus victories in as many matches. Adding to the bonus victory tally were Dakota Howard, Hunter Catka, and Jimmy Mullen with tech falls of their own in their respective bouts. Connor Brady and Luke Robie contributed to the Hokies win total with decision victories over the weekend.

Lewis Takes a Bow

On Senior Day, Mekhi Lewis stepped on the mat for the final time in Blacksburg with a signature performance – a 21-4 tech fall in the third period to a standing ovation from the Cassell crowd. Lewis continues his stellar final campaign, improving his record to 10-0 with six bonus victories and has yet to surrender an offensive point.

Freshmen Impress

Four freshmen took the mat for the Hokies over the weekend and all emerged victorious. Freshman Luke Robie made his dual debut on Friday night against Duke and pulled through with a crunch time double leg for the win in a sold-out Moss Arts Center. TJ Stewart got his second win in Cassell Coliseum on Saturday with a 12-6 victory over George Mason while true freshmen Mac Church and Jimmy Mullen both got their first dual meet victories to the tune of two tech falls.

Bama Sam Gets Back on Track

After a stunning loss last weekend at Virginia, Sam Latona rebounded with two victories over the weekend in dominant fashion. The Alabaster, Alabama native picked up a tech fall against Duke and a major decision on Saturday against former teammate Brandon Wittenberg.

Seniors Celebrated

The Hokies celebrated five seniors and two support members on Saturday for the final home match of the season. Mekhi Lewis, Bryce Andonian, Dakota Howard, Kolton Clark, and Connor Brady (has one year of eligibility) made the walk to a standing ovation by the Cassell faithful. Team manager Bre Johnson and creative video director Henry Alves were also recognized.

The Hokies return to action on Friday, February 16 on the road against Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. EST for another edition of ACC's Friday Night Duals. Follow Hokies Wrestling on X, Instagram, and Facebook for all the latest Tech wrestling news and updates.
