Kitley's 27 points leads Hokies to 82-73 victory against Wake Forest

LJVM COLISEUM, Winston --Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore each recorded double-doubles to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team earn a road victory over Wake Forest Demon Deacons 82-73 Thursday night.

The Hokies (11-2, 2-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who secured a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Amoore added a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists and Rose Micheaux helped out with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Led by Kitley's four offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 23 second chance points.

Virginia Tech did a great job disrupting Wake Forest shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Kitley's four rejections led the way individually for the Hokies.


 


How It Happened

After falling behind 12-10, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 4:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Amoore, to take a 15-12 lead. The Hokies then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 19-15 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 9:45 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Matilda Ekh, to increase its lead to 30-15. The Hokies proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 43-26 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech ran the fast break well, scoring five fast break points.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Micheaux, to expand its lead further to 64-53 with nine seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Demon Deacons had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 64-55 edge. Virginia Tech turned four offensive rebounds into 10 second chance points on the way to scoring 21 total points in the quarter.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kitley's jumper, to grow the lead to 79-68 with 1:34 to go in the contest. The Demon Deacons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 82-73 win.
