TALLAHASSEE, FL --Elizabeth Kitley totaled 30 points, but the Virginia Tech women's basketball team fell to the No. 21 Florida State Seminoles 89-81 on the road Sunday.
Kitley added 12 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks to her 30 point game to lead the Hokies (13-3, 4-1). Georgia Amoore helped out with 13 points and eight assists and Matilda Ekh chipped in with 14 points.
Led by Kitley's four offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.
Virginia Tech did a great job disrupting Florida State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Kitley's two rejections led the way individually for the Hokies.
How It Happened
Virginia Tech struggled out of the gate, falling behind 27-19 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hokies then cut the Seminoles lead to 39-36 before going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kitley, to take a 43-39 lead. Virginia Tech proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 46-40 advantage heading into halftime. During the period, Virginia Tech was strong from deep, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 27 points.
Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kitley, to expand its lead further to 63-57 with 2:48 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Seminoles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 65-64 edge. Virginia Tech played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
Florida State then erased the Virginia Tech lead in the game's final quarter for an 89-81 comeback victory. Virginia Tech pulled down two offensive rebounds to score four second chance points out of 16 total in the period
