King leads six Hokies in double figures in Virginia Tech's 98-50 victory against LIU

BLACKSBURG, VA --Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team over the LIU Sharks 98-50 at home Wednesday.

The double-doubles by Kitley, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Amoore, who had 10 points and 14 assists, led the Hokies (6-2) in the contest. Cayla King helped out with 21 points, four assists and three steals.

The Virginia Tech offense was very productive from downtown, making 17 threes on 35 attempts. King was the most prolific shooter for the Hokies, draining seven treys in the contest.

Virginia Tech's defense held LIU to only 33.9 percent shooting from the field, including 26.3 percent from beyond the arc.




How It Happened

After jumping out to a 14-8 advantage, Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run with 2:21 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Clara Strack, to increase its lead to 22-8, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.

Virginia Tech built that first quarter lead to 33-13 before going on a 12-0 run starting at the 4:19 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Carys Baker, to increase its lead to 45-13, a score that would hold until halftime. Virginia Tech forced 10 LIU turnovers in the period and turned them into 11 points.

Following intermission, Virginia Tech continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 64-30 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Baker, to expand its lead further to 69-30 with 30 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Sharks had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 69-33 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down six three-pointers in the quarter to score 18 of its 24 total points.

Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 83-44 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Baker's three, to grow the lead to 89-44 with 4:49 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 98-50 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 29 points.
