Five Reasons to Attend Virginia Tech Wrestling’s home opener

Virginia Tech wrestling is back at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum, featuring the dual meet opener on Friday, November 10 at 7 p.m.

Here are five reasons you should attend Virginia Tech wrestling's home opener below.

  1. Top-10 Match-Up – ACC vs Big 10

Tech wrestling has made it a tradition to open season competition against the nation's best and this year is no different as the No. 5 Hokies host the No. 8 Buckeyes. Tech has placed top-11 in the nation for the past decade and welcomes the returning fourth-place Buckeyes for Friday Night Lights. The past three match-ups between the two powerhouses have all been top-10 showdowns and within four points.

  1. Nationally Ranked Hokies

The Hokies feature nine nationally ranked wrestlers, including five returning All-Americans Eddie Ventresca, two-time All-American Sam Latona, Caleb Henson, two-time All-American Bryce Andonian, and three-time All-American and national champion Mekhi Lewis. Connor Brady, Sam Fisher, Andy Smith, and Hunter Catka round out the other ranked Hokies ahead of Friday night's battle.

  1. The "Last-First Dual Opener in Cassell" for a Legend and another Fan Favorite

Mekhi Lewis takes the mat for his last season opener on Friday night. The first and only national champion in program history announced his return for his final year of eligibility and embarks to add a second national title to his already legendary and illustrious list of accolades. Also making his walk through Cassell tunnel to the mat for the last first time is the ever-electric Bryce Andonian. Regarded as one of the most exciting wrestlers in the country and an undeniable fan favorite because of his "let it fly" wrestling style, Andonian enters his final season as a four-time ACC finalist and two-time All-American looking to end his career atop of the podium.

  1. The Return to Cassell

After nine long months, wrestling is back in Cassell Coliseum. With the first of six home duals in Cassell on Friday night, fans will be treated to an action-packed season, as match day experiences have been announced for the 2023-2024 season. Fans can purchase Maroon & Orange Memories packages which include mat side seating and video board messages throughout the season!
