Hokies fall to Virginia in the Commonwealth Clash

BLACKSBURG --The Virginia Tech volleyball team could not overcome a dynamic Cavaliers offense Saturday at home falling in the Commonwealth Clash to Virginia in straight sets (18-25, 24-26, 25-27).

The loss drops Virginia Tech's record to 13-16 overall and 3-15 in ACC play.

The Hokies were led by a double-double from Leandra Mangual-Duran, who registered 11 kills and 16 digs on the day. Ava Francis also added nine kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Hailey Pearce chipped in with 14 digs to go with four blocks from Cara Lewis.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-18. Virginia Tech trailed by as many as seven points as Virginia never gave up the lead in a set that was knotted up four times before the Cavaliers took control.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech then lost the second set 26-24 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. The Hokies lost the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Virginia finished the sweep with a set-three win. The Hokies couldn't endure a ferocious Virginia rally, falling 27-25 after leading by nine points at 15-6 earlier in the set.

The loss gives the Cavaliers half a point in the Commonwealth Clash, presented by Smithfield. The score for the Commonwealth Clash currently is 5.0.-0.0 in favor of Virginia. For more information, visit hokiesports.com/clash.
