GRAND CAYMAN -- Georgia Amoore, Elizabeth Kitley and Olivia Summiel combined to score 58 of Virginia Tech's 76 total points as the Hokies beat the Tulane Green Wave 76-70 at Saturday.
Amoore led the Hokies (5-1) with 24 points and seven assists. Kitley tacked on 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks and Summiel helped out with 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Virginia Tech collected 36 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Tulane's 30, led by Kitley's eight boards.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-11, Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run with 3:10 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kitley, to take an 18-14 lead. The Hokies then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 19-15 advantage. Virginia Tech got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for eight of its 19 total points.
Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 4:55 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kitley, to increase its lead to 33-23. The Green Wave then came roaring back to take a 33-31 lead heading into halftime.
After intermission, Virginia Tech rallied to tie it up at 36-36 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Cayla King, to grab a 42-36 lead with 6:52 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Green Wave had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-51 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 25 total points.
The Hokies coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Green Wave 20-19 in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
