Hokies fall to NC State in four sets

BLACKSBURG --The Virginia Tech volleyball team took the first set, but couldn't hang on and lost in four sets (25-16, 22-25, 19-25, 15-25) to the NC State Wolfpack Sunday at home at Cassell Coliseum.

The loss dropped Virginia Tech's record to 12-14 overall and 2-13 in ACC play.

The Hokies attack was paced by Leandra Mangual-Duran, who finished with 13 kills on the day, and by Hailey Pearce, who had 10. Virginia Tech was led defensively by Iliana Rodriguez, who had 13 digs.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies won the first point and never trailed to win the first set 25-16. Virginia Tech opened up its biggest lead of nine points to finish off the set. Virginia Tech also supplemented their offense with five aces in the opening set. The Hokies got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four NC State attacks in the frame.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech then dropped set two 25-22, tying the match at a set apiece. The Hokies dropped the first point and never clawed back into the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech then lost their second set in a row, falling behind in the match two sets to one. The Hokies fell in a tough set 25-19. Virginia Tech trailed by as many as six points as NC State grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was knotted up nine times before the Wolfpack took over in the second half of the period.

SET 4 | Virginia Tech lost the fourth set and the match, falling 25-15. The Hokies dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before losing the set and match to NC State.
