BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football's Derrick Canteen will wear the No. 25 jersey during the road matchup against Florida State.
Saturday afternoon will be Canteen's first time wearing the iconic number after transferring from Georgia Southern this Spring. The redshirt senior has been a versatile player for defensive coordinator Chris Marve, playing corner, nickel and in the box.
"It means a lot. It's a great tradition coming behind a great coach who has a lot of legacy and a lot of playing experience here at Virginia Tech." Canteen said. "So, just to uphold it, and in such a big ball game, it means a lot. I'm very excited to wear number 25 this weekend against Florida State."
The Evans, Georgia native has been very strong in run support this season grading at 88.8 according to Pro Football Focus. Canteen has amassed 19 total tackles, 2 TFLs and a forced fumble in 2023.
Tech retired Frank Beamer's No. 25 jersey in 2002, and since the start of the 2016 season, the Hokies have been paying homage to Tech's legacy of excellence on special teams by selecting a different special teams athlete each week to wear the honorary Beamer 25 jersey.
