WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Virginia Tech kicker John Love has been named a Lou Groza Award Star of the Week by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
The Spartanburg, South Carolina native was the only FBS kicker with five field goals this week. A 43-yarder marked the redshirt freshman's longest kick of the season, joined by makes from 39, 32, 31 and 24 yards in a 5-for-5 performance, helping the Hokies beat Syracuse 38-10. He added three PATs for an 18-point game, the most in the nation this week. Love is tied for 7th in the country with 15 field goals on the season.
The Lou Groza Award is presented annually to the top college football placekicker. It is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954.
