Hokies fall in Commonwealth Clash to Virginia 3-2 Sunday afternoon

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA --Cara Lewis collected 14 kills with a .560 hitting percentage, but the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 15-25, 11-15) to the Virginia Cavaliers Sunday on the road at John Paul Jones Arena.

The loss dropped Virginia Tech's record to 12-11 overall and 2-10 in ACC play.

The Hokies were led by a double-double from Hailey Pearce, who registered 10 kills and 13 digs on the day. Cara Lewis also added 14 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Ava Francis chipped in for with 15 digs to go with six blocks from Cara Lewis.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-20. Virginia Tech never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 after erasing a one-point deficit, the Cavaliers largest lead of the set. This came in a set that featured six ties and five lead changes. Virginia Tech also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech won the second set 25-20 to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. The Hokies led from the opening point on in the set to secure the victory. Virginia Tech opened up as much as a five-point lead at 9-4 before finishing off the set.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech couldn't end the match in a sweep, losing set three to make their lead two sets to one in the match. The Hokies fell in a tough set 25-15. Virginia Tech trailed by as many as 11 points as Virginia grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that was tied up four times before the Cavaliers took over the lead.

SET 4 | Virginia Tech then dropped their second straight set 25-15 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Hokies trailed by as many as 10 points as Virginia grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 and Virginia Tech wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up two times before the Cavaliers took over.

SET 5 | Virginia Tech won the first two sets, but dropped the next three sets on their way to losing the match. The Hokies had a lead early in the set at 7-7 before Virginia took over.

The loss gives the Cavaliers half a point in the Commonwealth Clash, presented by Smithfield. The score for the Commonwealth Clash currently is 4.5-0, in favor of Virginia. For more information, visit hokiesports.com/clash.
