Hokies drop 3-2 match to Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. --The Virginia Tech volleyball team lost in five sets (20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 10-15) to the Clemson Lady Tigers Sunday on the road at Jervey Gym.

The loss dropped Virginia Tech's record to 10-5 overall and 0-4 in ACC action.

The Hokies' offense was paced by Leandra Mangual-Duran, who finished with 14 kills on the day. Cara Lewis added 12 and Elayna Duprey chipped in with 11 as part of balanced Virginia Tech's attack. Defensively, the Hokies got 17 digs from Iliana Rodriguez along with eight blocks from Sydney Petersen.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-20. Clemson grabbed the advantage for good at 19-18 in a set that was tied up nine times before the Lady Tigers took over in the second half of the set.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech rallied after dropping the first set to take set two 25-22, tying the match at 1-1. The Hokies earned the set victory with a strong showing on the attacking side. Virginia Tech registered a .324 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands three times, the Hokies took control for good at 23-22 and rode that advantage to victory. The Virginia Tech offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Clemson responded to win set number three, putting Virginia Tech in a two sets to one hole. The Hokies fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-22.

SET 4 | Virginia Tech then responded to secure set four 25-23 to force a fifth set. The Hokies took the lead for good at 13-12 in a set that showcased three lead changes prior to Virginia Tech taking the lead. Virginia Tech also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set. Virginia Tech got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Clemson attacks in the period.

SET 5 | Virginia Tech came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but dropping the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-10, to fall in the match. The Hokies fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead.
