Four Hokies record double digit kills in four set victory over Fairleigh Dickinson

BETHLEHEM, PA --Cara Lewis recorded 11 kills with a .786 attack percentage to help carry the Virginia Tech volleyball team to a four-set win (28-26, 23-25, 25-19, 25-11) over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights Saturday at Grace Hall.

The win improved the Hokies' overall record to 9-0 on the season, tying the program record for best start to a season (2009).

The Hokies were led by a double-double from Leandra Mangual-Duran, who registered 11 kills and 10 digs on the day. Ava Francis also added 14 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Iliana Rodriguez chipped in for with 15 digs to go with four blocks from Lewis.

Setter Hanna Borer recorded 47 assists in the match, the most in a single contest in her career at Virginia Tech.

Following the final match of the weekend, three Tech athletes: Cara Lewis, Hanna Borer and Leandra Mangual Duran were named to the All-Tournament Team.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies grabbed the first set 28-26 powered by a solid performance on the attacking side. Virginia Tech registered a .400 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set victory. The Hokies opened up a 19-14 lead in the stanza and coasted to victory from there. They got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Fairleigh Dickinson attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech fell in set two 25-23 to tie the match 1-1. Fairleigh Dickinson grabbed the advantage for good at 24-23 in a set that was tied up five times before the Knights took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech put the second set loss behind and grabbed a 2-1 match lead with a win in the third set. The Hokies took the set 25-19 helped by a strong performance on the attacking side. Virginia Tech registered a .593 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set win. The Hokies ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the set.

SET 4 | Virginia Tech kept the momentum going, earning the match win with a 25-11 fourth-set victory. The Hokies took control of the set at 2-1 and held the lead the rest of the way. Virginia Tech led by 15 points at 22-7 before finishing off the stanza. Virginia Tech also supplemented their offense with five aces in the set.
