Hokies secure five-set victory against Toledo

TOLEDO, OH --The Virginia Tech volleyball team knocked off the Toledo Rockets in five sets (22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 15-11) Friday on the road at John F. Savage Arena.

The victory improved Virginia Tech's overall record to 5-0 on the season, the program's first such start since 2018.

Cara Lewis finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Hokies attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .714. Defensively, had four players reach double figures in digs, highlighted by Iliana Rodriguez's 22, 15 from Lucky-Rose Williams, and 11 more from Hanna Borer. From the front row, Lewis contributed six blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies battled back from an eight-point 20-12 hole, but Toledo held on to win the first set 25-22.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 set two win. The Hokies took control of the set lead early on at 6-5 and never looked back. Virginia Tech opened its biggest lead of the stanza, five points, to close out the set. Virginia Tech's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Toledo attacks in the set.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech built on that second set success with a victory in set number three to open up a lead at two sets to one. The Hokies took the lead for good at 10-9 in a set that had just one lead change before the Hokies took over the lead.

SET 4 | Virginia Tech couldn't keep the win streak alive, as the Rockets forced a fifth set with a 25-15 fourth-set win. The Hokies dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set.

SET 5 | Virginia Tech opened a two sets to one lead and fought off Toledo's comeback attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-11 and the match 3-2. The Hokies took the fifth set thanks to a solid showing on the attacking end. Virginia Tech put together a .571 attack percentage with 10 kills in the set win. The Hokies took their first and last lead of the match at 6-5 and rode it to victory
