Hokies earn sweep Youngstown State Saturday afternoon

TOLEDO, OH --The Virginia Tech volleyball team walked away with a three-set sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) over the Youngstown State Penguins Saturday at John F Savage Arena.

With the win, Tech heads home with a 6-0 record, their best start to a season since 2018.

Leandra Mangual-Duran finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Hokies offense. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Iliana Rodriguez had 20 and Elayna Duprey had 10. From the front row, Cara Lewis contributed seven blocks.

Following the conclusion of the match Hanna Borer, Iliana Rodriguez and Cara Lewis were named to the All-Tournament Team with Borer collecting MVP honors.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies won the first point and never looked back to win the first set 25-21. Virginia Tech led by as many as 11 points at 16-5 before closing out the set.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech won set two 25-20 to swiftly take a 2-0 lead. The Hokies never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 10-9 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Hokies took over the lead. The Hokies hit .300 over the course of the set. The Virginia Tech offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Tech then took the third set to sweep the match. The Hokies grabbed control of the set early when the score was 4-3 and never trailed to win 25-18. Virginia Tech led by 11 points at 21-10 before finishing off the set. The Virginia Tech offense also got a boost from four aces in the frame. Virginia Tech's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking six Youngstown State attacks.
