Hokies make history in four-set win over Queens University

BLACKSBURG, VA --The Virginia Tech volleyball team needed four sets (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-11, 25-11) to get past the Queens University Royals Friday at home at Cassell Coliseum.

With the win, Tech moves to 10-0, marking the first time in program history that the Hokies have achieved the feat.

The Hokies' attack was paced by Elayna Duprey, who finished with 18 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .364, and by Ava Francis, who had 14 kills. Defensively, Tech had two players reach double figures in digs as Iliana Rodriguez had 25 and Leandra Mangual Duran had 10.

» Leandra Mangual Duran had a team-high two aces in the win.
» Virginia Tech never trailed on the way to winning the fourth set 25-11.
» Elayna Duprey had a match-high 18 kills for Virginia Tech.
» Virginia Tech got a match-high 25 digs from Iliana Rodriguez.
» Virginia Tech attackers were helped by a match-high 44 assists from Hanna Borer.
» Hanna Borer finished with 44 assists, the second straight match that she has recorded 40 or more.
» For Rodriguez, the 25 digs marked a new high for her career at VT and was the third straight match with 20 or more.
» Duprey recorded double digit kills for the third match in a row and for Francis it was her fourth straight 10+ kill performance. 



How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies grabbed control of the set one lead at 5-4 and never trailed to win 25-23. Virginia Tech led by as many as seven points at 21-14 before finishing off the set, totaling 16 kills in the process.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech took set two 25-19 to promptly take a 2-0 lead. The Hokies took control of the set lead early on at 6-5 and never trailed. The Hokies led by as many as seven points at 24-17 before finishing off the set. The Virginia Tech offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech saw its chance for a 3-0 sweep end when Queens took the third set. The Hokies fought back from a nine-point deficit at 18-9, but Queens (NC) held on to win the set 25-22.

SET 4 | Virginia Tech then responded to earn the victory with a 25-11 set-four performance. The Hokies led from the opening point on in the set to secure the victory. Virginia Tech finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, 14 points, to close out the set.
