MOST RECENT MATCHUP
Dec. 28, 2012 – Virginia Tech 13, Rutgers 10 (Orlando, Fla.)
Tech secured a thrilling overtime victory, defeating Rutgers 13-10 in the Russel Athletic Bowl after a late-game tie in the fourth quarter. Tech's defense held Rutgers to only 196 yards of offense, including a game-changing 32-yard interception return by safety Antone Exum, which set up the Hokies only touchdown to tie it up. This game marked the fewest yards gained by a Tech opponent in 2012. The Hokies also racked up three sacks against Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova and forced a couple of turnovers. On the other side of the ball, Tech quarterback Logan Thomas completed a 32-yard pass to receiver Dyrell Roberts, followed by a 25-yard completion to fellow receiver Corey Fuller. These two plays set up a pivotal 25-yard field goal by Cody Journell, shortening the Rutgers lead to 10-3. Heading into overtime, the Hokies defense prevented the Scarlet Knights from reaching the endzone, and Journell knocked in a 22-yard field goal to win the game.
