Hokies secure 3-0 sweep over Memphis

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Virginia Tech volleyball team earned a three-set victory (25-12, 25-12, 25-20) against the Memphis Tigers Friday morning at John F Savage Arena in their first match of the Toledo Invitational.

The straight set victory improved the Hokies' overall record to 4-0 on the season, while keeping their perfect record of not dropping a set in tact as well. 

Tech is 4-0 for the first time since 2021, Head Coach Marci Byers' second season in Blacksburg.

Elayna Duprey finished with 13 kills on the day to lead the Hokies attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .55. Defensively, had four players reach double figures in digs, highlighted by Iliana Rodriguez's 16, 14 from Olivia Angell, and 14 more from Hanna Borer. From the front row, Sydney Petersen contributed five blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies took control of the first set at 5-4 and never trailed afterwards, going on to win 25-12. Tech opened up its biggest lead, 13 points, to close out the set, totaling 18 kills while only notching one attack error in the process. The squad got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Memphis attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech continued to roll after a set one win by earning a 25-12 victory in set two. The Hokies led from the opening point on in the set to secure the victory. Virginia Tech opened up as much as a 13 point lead at 24-11 before closing out the set. The Hokies hit .450 over the course of the set.

SET 3 | Tech then closed the match in a 3-0 sweep after winning set three by a five-point margin. The Hokies scored first and never trailed in the set to secure a 25-20 victory. Virginia Tech opened up as much as a seven point lead at 17-10 before finishing off the set.
