Gallo named to Mackey Award watch list

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech tight end Nick Gallo earned a spot on the John Mackey Award watch list on Friday. The award is presented annually to the nation's best tight end.

The award honors its namesake, Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee John Mackey, who is considered one of the best tight ends of all time. An exemplary member of his community, Mackey was a role model on and off the field, winning a Super Bowl and becoming the first president of the NFLPA.

Gallo started all 11 games during the 2022 season. He ranked second on the team in receptions (30) and third in receiving yards (256). The fifth-year senior has appeared in 46 career games, making 27 starts. Over his career, the Richboro, Pennsylvania, native has 55 receptions for 469 yards and a touchdown.

Tech opened fall camp Wednesday, the first of 15 practices in the preseason, and is slated to begin its season against Old Dominion on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. ET. Fans can now purchase single-game tickets and choose their preferred seat locations for the season opener.
