BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women's soccer opened Thompson Field on Thursday, Aug. 24 to a crowd of 1,162 fans who helped cheer on the Hokies to their third straight shutout of the season. Virginia Tech (2-0-1) delivered the Dukes of James Madison (2-1) their first loss of the season 3-0.
How it Happened
Spirits were high for the Hokies at Thompson Field as head coach Chugger Adair recorded his 150th career win at the helm of the Virginia Tech women's soccer team. Senior Taylor Bryan started things off for the Hokies scoring her first goal of the season shooting on the turn in the seventh minute of the match, assisted by Sophie Maltese.
Sophomore Natalie Mitchell logged her first penalty kick goal of the season (60th minute) tucking the ball into the far left corner of the net. Mitchell has gone 3 for 3 on penalty kicks in her career as a Hokie. Freshman Anna Weir recorded her first career goal in the 78th minute of the match lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper's head and into the net.
Virginia Tech held a 20-7 shot advantage over the Dukes allowing only four shots to make their way on target towards goalkeeper Alia Skinner. Skinner recorded her third shutout of the season.
