BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football met with local media on Wednesday following practice and an exclusive Triumph NIL interview with Brent Pry that announced the starting quarterback for the opener. Pry, quarterbacks coach Tyler Bowen and redshirt senior Grant Wells spoke with the media about the decision. Read and watch what they had to say below.
Head Coach Brent Pry
On the decision to name Wells as the starter:
"The way Grant finished out camp kind of put a stamp on it. What he did the other night in the stadium I was really impressed with. You know just the leadership, and we've learned a lot more about him and he's grown. You know what he's saying to the other guys in between plays, during the play. How he's meeting, the extra work he's putting in, living the life of a Power Five major league quarterback. He's just grown a lot that way."
On what stood out during Fall Camp's final scrimmage:
"I love the team speed we're playing with on defense. The staff is doing a great job. We're reacting. When the ball declares you want to see 11 guys react on the ball. Then you want to see them hard charge it. We're doing a good job of that, better than last year. I think we're faster than we were last year but we're also reacting and driving better."
Offensive Coordinator Tyler Bowen
On Wells' performance during the final scrimmage:
"I think just operation and command of everything we're doing. The way he's making checks. The way he's communicating. He just seemed in total control, which he's done that all Fall."
Quarterback Grant Wells
On wide receiver Ali Jennings' skill set within the ACC:
"Just his route running. You know he's a veteran to say the least. He's played in some games, some big games. He's proven to have what it takes. It's pretty evident out there, that his route running, and his understanding of defenses is what is going to separate him from the rest. And make him a very lethal weapon on our side of the ball."
