Virginia Tech secures 3-0 shutout victory over Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Virginia Tech opened the season with a 3-0 shutout win against Butler on Thursday, Aug. 17 at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. Tech has won 12 of its last 13 season openers under head coach Chugger Adair. The Hokies start the 2023 campaign 1-0. 

"I am pleased with the overall result today," said head coach Chugger Adair. "Butler was a good opponent who forced us to work hard defensively in the first half. I am happy with how our team was able to adjust in the second half.The team made some adjustments and controlled the tempo which really helped set us apart in the match. I am very pleased with the group's effort tonight and it was nice to see freshman Anna Weir and Samantha DeGuzman get the team some points. We have to get back to business and get ready to play Indiana on Sunday." 

How it Happened
Virginia Tech took a 1-0 lead when Lauren Gogal recorded her second career goal on a head shot from Natalie Mitchell's corner kick. The Hokies dominated the second half as freshman Samantha DeGuzman scored her first collegiate goal in the 66th minute of the match (2-0), assisted by Anna Weir. 
 


The Bulldogs were forced to play one woman down in the 70th minute after Claire Farrington received a red card. Hokies took advantage and extended their lead to 3-0 on a goal from Natalie Mitchell in the 75th minute of the match, safely securing the Hokies' victory. 

Emma Pelkowski recorded two shots during the match, followed by Allie George,  Averi Visage, and Eden Skyers with one shot each during the Hokies first 90 minutes of play this season.

  • Lauren Gogal scored the first goal of the match in the 53rd minute, assisted by Natalie Mitchell.   
  • Samantha DeGuzman recorded her first collegiate goal with an assist from Anna Weir in the 66th minute. 
  • Natalie Mitchell recorded 3 shots, 1 goal, and 1 assist, scoring the Hokies third goal of the match in the 75th minute. 
  • Virginia Tech defeated Butler in their first matchup in program history. 
  • Alia Skinner tallied 3 saves. 
  • Freshman Anna Weir, Samantha DeGuzman, and Ava Arengo made their season debut in the Hokies starting lineup.
