NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Redshirt senior linebacker Matt Johnson has made an intentional impact on his community and was recently named a nominee for the 2023 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.

Johnson's dedication to serving the local community stood out to Tech's coaching staff and reflects his genuine character.

Recognized for their community service and academic excellence, 135 student-athletes were recommended by their coaches to be one of 22 finalists, which will be announced in September.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992 to highlight the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field.

Matt Johnson's nomination provides more acknowledgment of his service after receiving the Martin Luther King Light of Hope Award at Deep Run High School.

The MLK Light of Hope Award is presented to a student from each Henrico County Public school who best demonstrates the attributes of Dr. King.

Watch Matt Johnson and the Hokies host Old Dominion in the season opener at Lane Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. ET.
