Virginia Tech outscores Bowling Green, 25-2, in doubleheader

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Senior Anthony Arguelles had everything working on Saturday, punching out nine Bowling Green hitters over 6.2 innings of work to help lead the Virginia Tech Hokies over the Falcons 13-2.

In addition to his nine strikeouts, Arguelles (3-1) tossed 6.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and walking three for Virginia Tech (27-16). Sophomore Brady Kirtner also made an impact on the mound for the Hokies, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.

In the batter's box, the Hokies were paced by junior Carson Jones, who went 4-for-5 on the day with two home runs and two RBI. Sophomore Carson DeMartini put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and six RBI. Senior Chris Cannizzaro also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Jones put Virginia Tech on the board with a leadoff home run off senior Gage Schenk.

The Hokies then held the Falcons scoreless before expanding their lead in the sixth inning. Virginia Tech brought home a pair, with one run driven in by freshman Brody Donay's single, which brought the Hokies lead to 3-0.

Bowling Green narrowed Virginia Tech's lead to 3-2 before the Hokies stretched the advantage to 13-2 in the eighth inning. The Hokies hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring 10 runs. The score remained 13-2 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech coasted to the win.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Drue Hackenberg, junior Matthew Siverling and freshman Tommy Szczepanski combined to throw a shutout on Saturday as the Virginia Tech Hokies blanked the Bowling Green Falcons 12-0.

Hackenberg (5-5) started and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (28-16), going six shutout innings while giving up five hits, walking none, and striking out nine. Szczepanski was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going two shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out three.

Offensively, the Hokies were paced by freshman Clay Grady, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Junior Carson Jones compiled a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Sam Tackett also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Jones.

The Hokies then tacked on runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings, with their biggest output coming in the fourth when they scored seven times. The big hits in that inning were a two-run home run off the bat of Tackett and a two-run single from Grady.
