No. 24/23 Hokies run rule Boston U. 9-0 to advance to Athens Regional Final

ATHENS, Ga. – Freshman Lyndsey Grein tossed a five-hit shutout to lead the No. 24 Virginia Tech Hokies over the No. 25 Boston University Terriers 9-0 in five innngs on Saturday evening.

The win puts the Hokies in the Athens regional final, where they will have to win two games against the host No. 14 Georgia Bulldogs to clinch a Super Regional berth.

Grein (10-5) went the distance for Virginia Tech (39-19), giving up five hits, walking two and striking out four.

Junior Emma Ritter led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Kylie Aldridge furnished a standout effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI. Junior Addy Greene also helped out with a double and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Virginia Tech got on the board thanks to Greene's RBI double with one out to score Brown who reached on a walk

Tech then tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth innings, with their biggest output coming in the fourth when they scored five times. Ritter's home run started off the fourth, followed by a sacrifice fly from Aldridge and RBI from Greene and Fagan. In the fifth, Kelsey Bennett's RBI double scored one and Aldridge tallied two RBI off a double as well.
 


GAME NOTES

» Grein tossed a five-hit shutout for the Hokies.
» Virginia Tech grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Hokies out-hit the Terriers at a 9-5 clip.
» The Hokies drew five walks from Boston University pitching.
» Ritter led the Hokies at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.
» Boston University was led offensively by junior Lauren Keleher, who went 2-for-3.

The Hokies will face the Bulldogs at Noon tomorrow, with the if necessary game slated for 2:30 p.m.
