WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Flipping the score in its favor with a pair of home run swings midway through Friday's affair, the Virginia Tech baseball team showed life against No. 1 Wake Forest, though ultimately came up short, 7-5, at David F. Couch Ballpark.
Despite Friday's defeat, Virginia Tech (29-21, 11-17 ACC) managed to clinch its third consecutive ACC Baseball Championship berth due to Louisville's 7-4 loss against Florida State. The Hokies will learn on Saturday evening their pool placement and game schedule in next week's conference tournament, taking place this year at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run homer from Donay.
The Demon Deacons failed to push any runs across before the Hokies offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Virginia Tech scored twice on Hurley's two-run homer, which brought the Hokies lead to 5-2. The Hokies were unable to hold the lead, as Wake Forest scored five times over the remaining four innings to grab the 7-5 win.
