Hokies open Athens Regional with 6-1 win over No. 25/RV Boston U.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Junior Emma Ritter and senior Kelsey Brown each racked up three hits to help propel the No. 24 Virginia Tech Hokies over the No. 25 Boston University Terriers 6-1 on Friday.

Sophomore Emma Lemley (21-10) started in the circle and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (38-18). The right-hander went five shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out five. Molly Jacobson came on in relief in the six, throwing two innings and giving up one unearned run on three hits.

In addition to her three hits, Brown had an RBI to lead the Hokies. Ritter added two RBI to her three-hit performance as well. Junior Addy Greene also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ritter.

The Hokies then held the Terriers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Virginia Tech scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Greene, which brought the Hokies lead to 4-0.

Virginia Tech kept the Terriers without a run before building their lead to 6-0 the following inning. The Hokies scored twice, with one run coming across on Brown's single. Boston University put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Virginia Tech closed the game out for the 6-1 win.


 

GAME NOTES

» Virginia Tech got three-hit games from both Brown and Ritter.
» Lemley struck out five Terriers hitters.
» The Hokies out-hit the Terriers at a 13-4 clip.
» Virginia Tech pitchers limited Boston University to just 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Ritter led the Hokies at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
» Boston University was led offensively by senior Nicole Amodio, who went 1-for-2.
» Senior Lizzy Avery led the Terriers pitching staff, throwing 3.2 innings of three-run ball.

The Hokies will now face the winner of No. 14/12 Georgia and North Carolina Central at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
