Heroic Tech comeback ends in heartbreak against No. 16 Tigers

BLACKSBURG, Va. --The Virginia Tech Hokies put together a furious comeback, scoring four runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 9-8 to the No. 16 Clemson Tigers Saturday.

Sophomore Brady Kirtner (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Virginia Tech (29-18, 11-14). Junior Henry Weycker was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 4.1 shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking one and striking out two.

Sophomore Carson DeMartini led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 3-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, a home run, two walks and an RBI. Senior Chris Cannizzaro provided a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Freshman Garrett Michel also chipped in, going 2-for-5 for Virginia Tech with a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. DeMartini put Virginia Tech on the board with a leadoff home run off sophomore Austin Gordon.

The Tigers then rallied to score four runs and take a 4-1 lead before the Hokies got back on the board in the fourth. Virginia Tech picked up two runs when a single from sophomore Christian Martin brought home junior Jack Hurley and DeMartini, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Tigers.

Virginia Tech held the Tigers off the scoreboard before rallying to tie it up at four in the sixth. The Hokies scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Brody Donay.

The Tigers broke up the tie and took the lead heading into the ninth inning, when Virginia Tech got back on the board. The Hokies left the yard two times in the inning on the way to scoring four runs, bringing the score to 9-8 in favor of Clemson. The Hokies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
