CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 13/17 Virginia Tech softball team fell in extra innings to Virginia Friday night, as the Cavaliers evened up the series with a 6-5 win in eighth innings.
Sophomore Molly Jacobson (4-2) came out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (30-9, 10-4) and took the loss. The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out two.
Senior Jayme Bailey was clutch offensively for the Hokies, hitting the game-tying grand slam in the top of the seventh to bring the game to 5-5. Junior Emma Ritter put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-2 with two walks. Senior Kelsey Brown also helped out, going 3-for-5 for Virginia Tech.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Virginia Tech got an RBI single from sophomore Rachel Castine, scoring Ritter from second base.
The Cavaliers expanded their lead to 5-1, scoring on a wild pitch and an error, before the Hokies offense got back to work, tying it up in the seventh. Virginia Tech got a grand slam from Bailey to score all four of its runs in the inning, which brought the score level at 5-5. Virginia then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to take the 6-5 win.
