No. 13/17 Hokies complete doubleheader sweep of Longwood

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to an 11-1 victory against the Longwood Lancers in five innings on Tuesday.

Sophomore Molly Jacobson (4-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (29-8). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out two.

Junior Cameron Fagan led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run, her second of the day, a walk and two RBI. Junior Emma Ritter continued to excel at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Ritter finished with six RBI on the day. Sophomore Rachel Castine also contributed, going 1-for-2 for Virginia Tech with a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Virginia Tech scored twice, with one run coming across on senior Jayme Bailey's single and the other an RBI from Meredith Slaw

The Lancers scored their only run of the game in the second inning off a solo home run. Virginia Tech then scored twice on Ritter's two-run homer in the third, which brought the Hokies lead to 4-1.

Virginia Tech held Longwood without a run before expanding their lead to 11-1 the following inning. The Hokies bats heated up in the inning, scoring seven runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Castine and a two-run home run from Fagan. The score remained 11-1 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech took the win in five innings for the doubleheader sweep.

The Hokies continue ACC play this weekend, making the trip to Charlottesville to face Virginia in the Commonwealth Clash beginning on Thursday at 5 p.m.
