Hokies set for quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 Syracuse

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Virginia Tech and No. 2 Syracuse will meet in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship, presented by Ally, on Wednesday at 4 p.m. inside the American Legion Memorial Stadium.

NEWS & NOTES


THE SERIES

  • This will be the third meeting between the Hokies and Orange in the ACC Tournament, while it will be the 17th all-time meeting.
  • 'Cuse holds a 15-1 advantage over Tech, including a 2-0 mark in both ACC Tournament matchups.
  • The sides recently met in postseason play in 2021, a 9-4 win for Syracuse in the quarterfinals. Seven Hokies that are on this season's roster featured in that game, including Paige Tyson, who scored twice.
  • In an earlier matchup this season, Syracuse defeated Virginia Tech, 16-5. Blair Guy and Olivia Vergano scored twice that day, but Meaghan Tyrrell alone matched the Hokies in goals with five. The matchup on March 5 was Ella Rishko's last outing without a goal.

  • Be Virginia Tech's third win in the ACC Championship in program history.
  • Be Virginia Tech's first neutral-site win under Kristen Skiera.
  • Be Virginia Tech's first time winning two games in one ACC Tournament.
  • Be the first time a No. 7 seed advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals.
  • Clinch Virginia Tech's second trip to the ACC Tournament semifinals.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Virginia Tech defeated Pitt, 18-6, on Sunday at Thompson Field in the first round of the ACC Tournament. The win marked Tech's second-ever win in the tournament in ACC history.
  • The Hokies were led freshman Ella Rishko, who tied her career high in goals with seven. With that mark, Rishko tied the ACC Tournament single-game scoring record.

ACC RECOGNITION

  • Four Hokies were recognized by the ACC on Tuesday: Vergano (second team), Gresham (All-Freshman), Rishko (All-Freshman) and Torres (All-Freshman).
  • Vergano, who leads Tech in scoring and points with 49 goals and 13 assists, earns the All-ACC honor after being named to the All-Freshman team in 2022.
  • With three freshmen on the list, Tech tied the ACC record for most players in one season on the list. This is the third year that the recognition has been part of ACC awards.
